CHRISTMAS NEWSLETTER 2011!

From joeNdoris

December 24, 2011

Doris:
Retirement has not slowed us down and as long as our health is good and our minds are clear (though some may be doubt that aspect!). We remain transient. If we are not in La Quinta or Honolulu or Redondo Beach we are, most likely, down under, up over or somewhere in between!

Our thoughts this Christmas season are filled with memories of years past and the friends and family who have shaped our lives and deepened our life experiences.

• Briefly, this years highlights include fulfilling our responsibilities as President of theSAWROA (Salvation Army Western Retired Officers Association), planning and
organizing the annual retreat at Mt. Crags Camp in Calabasas. General Paul Rader andCommissioner Kay Rader were our guests for the weekend. We had a great time! 80plus in attendance.
• In September I attended my 50th(!!!!) Reunion in San Francisco with my St. Luke’sSchool of Nursing class. Amazing how little we all have changed in 50 years! It was awonderful time of reminiscing and getting caught up on the lives of classmates after 50 (!!!!) Years. It was SO much fun!
• In November we were delighted to be invited to New Zealand for an Officers Retreat. Two divisions, along with the officers on THQ meeting together north of Auckland forfour days. Wonderful! Commissioners Don and Debbie Bell loaned us a car and a GPSand we spent six days touring the North Island. What a beautiful country! (See photo: ariver trip not soon forgotten!!)
• Now, here we are in Honolulu with our grandkids for the Holidays, our third trip this
year. Such a blessing to be able to spend time with these delightful children!

Joe:
Clarification. Doris was President of SAWROA. I was her GOPHER. And she did a great
job, I might add.

The photo above was taken just moments before the Jet Boat ride in New Zealand. Notice
that Doris is smiling. Not so, had this been taken after the ride. She was expecting a gentle
ride up to the falls and back, picture taking ops and all. Not so, it was a water version of the
old Deja Vu Roller Coaster at Six Flags, only we weren’t strapped in, cracked ribs and all.
A highlight this year was an Alumni Dinner in the old Broadway Youth and Family Center
Gym, the week before it came tumbling down to make way for the impressive new Kroc
Center taking its place. It was deja vu all over again, lots of hugging, tears and reliving great
memories. We’re looking forward toward doing it all over again, May 18, 2012, when the
new center will be dedicated – but this time looking forward.

Finally, for me especially, this year has been all about SAVN.TV (Salvation Army Vision
Network). It’s a daring, cutting edge venture and I feel fortunate and privileged to be a small
part of it – what we believe will eventually become a galaxy of Cyberspace congregations.
This is TSA’s virtual, Cyberspace Street Corner of the 21st Century – PROPHETIC! BOLD!
UNIQUE! It’s an Internet TV Network and Mission Station designed to fulfill The Great
Commission – it’s website (Cyberspace Interactive Theater) still under creation. The
interactive part is what will be exciting, transformative and unique. Click on over and take a
look: WWW.SAVN.TV - more detail on its vision/mission under “About Us.”
